ABOUT

Sarah-May is a woven textile artist who draws inspiration from the places she visits as well as the vibrant colours, intricate patterns and rich textures found in nature. Although her artistic journey began with drawing and painting, she was irresistibly drawn to weaving for its tactile qualities and the fascinating mathematical processes involved.

Working from her home studio, on her growing number of looms, Sarah-May experiments with pushing the boundaries of traditional weaving techniques and endeavours to invent new ones. Her works are an intriguing balance between her artistic intuition and the structured, mathematical precision of the weaving process. Each piece is constructed on the loom as a single length of fabric – nothing is stitched, sewn or added to the pieces after weaving.

With a professional background in textile design, including roles within university textile departments and design studios, Sarah-May brings both technical expertise and creative innovation to her practice. Her work is available through Wingates Gallery, and she regularly exhibits at regional events such as Art House Leicester.

Sarah-May is currently one of the selected makers featured in the prestigious “Made in the Middle” exhibition, which showcases contemporary craft from across the Midlands. The exhibition is touring key venues including Leicester Gallery, The Hub in Sleaford, Nuneaton Museum & Art Gallery, and MAC Birmingham. At the exhibition launch, Sarah-May was awarded the Textiles and Fibres Prize, recognising her innovative technique and contribution to contemporary textile art.
She is never content with standing still and is always looking for her next engaging project.
